CALVIN COOLIDGE: THE MONADNOCK REGION AS I’VE KNOWN IT
APRIL 4, 2017 – KEENE, NH: The
Historical Society of Cheshire County has been collecting, preserving and
communicating the region’s history since 1927, back when Calvin Coolidge was
President of the United States. In honor
of the Society’s 90th anniversary, local historian Tracy Messer will
make his debut portraying "Calvin Coolidge" at its annual meeting on Wednesday,
April 19th at 7:00 pm in an original presentation entitled Calvin Coolidge: The Monadnock Region As I’ve Known It.
Born in Vermont, Calvin Coolidge
served as Governor of Massachusetts and Vice President before becoming our
nation's 30th President on August 2, 1923. Famous for his blend of Yankee wit
and wisdom, "Silent Cal" had surprising connections to many towns
here in the Monadnock region: Keene, Chesterfield, Fitzwilliam, Marlborough,
Stoddard, Peterborough, Walpole, Hancock, Dublin, Marlow and Gilsum.
You’ll laugh as you learn about the
fascinating stories about Calvin Coolidge’s classmates, relatives, and road
trips:
• Which Mayor of Keene is descended from one of Coolidge’s
classmates?
• What town welcomed first lady Grace Coolidge to their
sesquicentennial?
• Where was the intersection that led more than one US
president astray?
• Who was the Monadnock artist that made a portrait of
Calvin, Jr.?
President Coolidge’s great
granddaughter, Jennifer (Sayles) Harville of Westmoreland will join in on a
lively question and answer afterwards. This event is free and open to the
public. A brief annual meeting will occur before President Coolidge’s
presentation. For further information call 603-352-1895 or visit hsccnh.org.
